Summer in Israel

Soon Lev Lalev Orphanage and Children’s Home in Israel will run its eighth annual summer camp program.

Let me share with you the following amazing story.

A few years ago Tamar came to the Home from Jerusalem. She was born in Israel to parents who emigrated from the Ukraine. Unfortunately her mother died shortly after they arrived, and her father burdened by this devastating loss decided to return to the Ukraine. He left Tamar at her neighbor’s home and he has never returned to Israel.
Left as an orphan with no one to care for her, the social welfare department asked us to take her into the Home. At first she barely spoke and barely ate and even resisted putting on clean and fresh clothes. She was anti social and hostile.

As our summer camp began, we saw a significant change in Tamar’s attitude and behavior. Her interest in sports and her competitive spirit enabled her to find peace and happiness. For Tamar, the summer camp was a lifeline. She is well liked among the girls and doing very well in school.

At the Lev Lalev Orphanage and Children’s Home in Israel, school is over but our work goes on. It is a mitzvah to provide programming over the long hot summer. Since many of our girls are academically challenged, our summer program is crucial to their well being and provides them with a healthy outlet.

What a heartbreaking story, but at the same time, I’m glad that Lev LaLev was open to accepting her. I can only imagine how much patience it took while Tamar processed her new surroundings. I’m glad that Lev LaLev had a venue that allowed Tamar to open up and feel more safe. May her spirit exceed the beauty in her name.
